Overview
Built at a Finland-based education startup, the app delivers short lessons, quizzes and progress tracking. I work across the React Native app and the Node.js services behind it.
The challenge
Students switch between phones, tablets and patchy connections. The app had to feel native on both iOS and Android, keep working offline, and stay simple enough for younger learners.
The approach
- 01
One React Native and Expo codebase for both platforms, with platform-specific touches where they matter — navigation gestures, haptics and safe areas.
- 02
Lessons and progress are cached on the device and synced when the connection returns, so nothing is lost on a train or in a classroom with poor Wi-Fi.
- 03
Firebase handles authentication and real-time updates, so teachers see progress the moment a student finishes a quiz.
What it does
Offline lessons
Downloaded content keeps working without a connection.
Live progress
Teachers see quiz results the moment they’re submitted.
Native feel
Smooth gestures and transitions on both iOS and Android.
Over-the-air updates
Fixes ship through Expo without waiting for store review.
